A metallic taste in your mouth is considered as a bitter, acidic, sour, generally foul taste. This makes it difficult for you to eat anything. Medically, this abnormal taste is known as “Dysgeusia”. This condition isn’t very serious, but it may be very discomforting for people who are suffering from it. Therefore, to reduce this discomfort, below are some of the effective tips that you should not ignore.

Oral Hygiene

To get rid of a metallic taste in your mouth and other oral issues, good oral hygiene practices is essential. It helps to prevent a lot of health problems, including dysgeusia. You can follow some of the tips below.

  • Brush your teeth at least 2 minutes for 2 times a day. Moreover, clean your teeth after your meals to prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • When brushing your teeth, you should also brush your tongue area to reduce the metallic taste.
  • Remember to change your toothbrush every three months.
  • Floss and rinse the mouth with a high-quality mouthwash.
  • Visit a dentist once per year, or more often when recommended.

Baking Soda

  • Add 1 tsp. of green tea leaves into 1 cup of hot water.
  • Then, cover and steep it for 10 minutes.
  • After that, strain the tea and add honey to it.
  • Finally, drink it for 2 to 3 times a day.

Oil Pulling

An excess level of toxins in your body is a crucial reason for a foul taste in your mouth. To deal with this cause, you can use oil pulling as an effective remedy. Oil pulling can aid in getting rid of toxins and bacteria causing odor in your mouth.

  • In the morning, put one tbsp. of coconut oil in the mouth.
  • Swish it around the mouth and teeth for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Spit it out and rinse the mouth with clean water.
  • Repeat this remedy daily for about 1 month.

Note: Avoid gargling or swallowing the oil.

Peppermint

If your dysgeusia is caused due to sinus and upper respiratory infections, you can use peppermint to treat it because peppermint contains natural antibacterial effects. It can also inhibit the growth of bacteria causing odor in your mouth, which prevents bad odors. Besides, its soothing smell helps to freshen up your breath. In addition, it calms your digestive system and reduces acid reflux symptoms, including a metallic taste in your mouth.

  • Put a handful of crushed peppermint leaves into 1 jug of hot water. Then, cover and steep it for 1 hour. After that, strain it and drink it throughout the day.
  • Or, chew 5-6 fresh peppermint leaves for 2 or 3 times daily.
  • You can also prepare a cup of peppermint tea and use it to rinse the mouth once a day.

Apple Cider Vinegar

As you may know, apple cider vinegar helps to balance the pH in your mouth. It aids in alkalizing and neutralizing the acidic environment in your mouth while relieving the metallic taste. Lemon

To get rid of the foul taste in the mouth, you can use lemon as an excellent remedy. The citric acid present in lemon helps to stimulate salivation, which is effective at breaking the metal taste in the mouth as well as fighting bacterial growth in the mouth to maintain oral health.

  • Pour the juice of 1/2 lemon into 1 glass of warm water. Rinse your mouth with this solution 2 or 3 times daily.

  • Or, chew tender lemon leaves or include them in your soup recipes or salads.

Water

To treat dysgeusia, you should drink water regularly during the day. This helps to remove the toxins in the mouth. To ensure that you are drinking enough water, you can check the color of your urine. If your urine is a clear color, it means that your water intake is sufficient.
